The Washington State city of Waitsburg, with a population of barely 1,250, is located in Walla Walla County and is the home of Waitsburg Fairgrounds. The town has a rich history dating back to 1859 when Robert Kennedy settled there. Within 5 years Sylvester Wait had developed a thriving mill industry and the town was named after him. In 1911 Waitsburg Raceway opened its 4 furlong oval racetrack offering programmes of quarter horse and thoroughbred racing, although the facilities were basic and wooden grandstand rudimentary. In due course it boosted crowds by becoming an integral part of the Blue Mountain Fair Circuit, with just 2 days racing annually, and by introducing its principal race, the Glover Memorial Quarter Horse Futurity. By mid-2010 the State had refused permission for races to be held on any of the 4 Fairs in the city and the track staged its final meeting on 16th May 2010. |
